As work proceeded on the Lion class dreadnought in the opening years of the General War, the Lyran Star Empire started to work on a conversion of the Tiger class cruiser that would not reduce the production of Lions but still produce heavier hulls: the result was the Wildcat class battlecruiser (BC). Larger than most competing cruisers, but smaller than a true dreadnought, the Wildcat was an anomaly resulting from the need to get as many heavy units into service as possible. The Wildcat was sometimes regarded as a dreadnought, but it was, in fact, a cruiser.

The BC featured a crew complement of 520, a capacity of nine shuttlecraft, and was equipped with four science labs, four transporters, four tractor beam emitters, and four mech tractors. The class was armed with four Expanding Sphere Generators, four banks of Type-4 disruptors, eight banks of Type-1 phasers, and four banks of Type-3 phasers. The BC remained in service until 2286, when it was superseded by the BCPP refit, introduced in 2280. The BCPP remained in service until 2299, when it was superseded by the BCP+ refit, which was introduced in 2287. The BCP+ featured stronger shields, and replaced two of its Type-3 phaser banks with Type-1s.[1]
